Coverage available

Florida auto insurance runs on a no-fault system — one of only 12 states that require it. Instead of the other driver’s insurance paying for your injuries, your own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage pays first, regardless of who caused the accident. Florida requires $10,000 in PIP and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability (PDL) — but notably, Florida does not require Bodily Injury Liability coverage for most drivers, which means if you cause a serious accident, you could be personally on the hook for damages beyond your PIP limits.

Florida also consistently ranks among the most expensive states for car insurance — a combination of hurricane and flood risk, a high rate of uninsured drivers, and historical PIP-related fraud all push costs up. Rates vary a lot by city:

CityEstimated Full Coverage (Annual)
Miami$3,100
Fort Lauderdale$2,950
Hialeah$2,900
Orlando$2,600
Jacksonville$2,400
Tampa$2,400

Estimates based on regional data — your actual rate depends on your driving history, vehicle, and coverage choices.

Coverage Options

Find the right coverage for where you are in life

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Required in Florida — $10,000 minimum coverage for your own medical bills, regardless of fault.

PIP pays 80% of covered medical expenses and 60% of lost wages after an accident, no matter who caused it — but you must seek treatment within 14 days to qualify for benefits.

Property Damage Liability (PDL)

Required in Florida — $10,000 minimum coverage for damage you cause to someone else’s property.

PDL covers repairs to another driver’s vehicle or property, but it won’t pay for damage to your own car — that’s what comprehensive and collision are for.

Bodily Injury Liability (BIL)

Not required for most Florida drivers — but going without it leaves you personally exposed.

Since Florida doesn’t mandate BIL, a serious at-fault accident could leave you personally responsible for injury costs beyond your PIP limits. Most agents recommend carrying it anyway.

Comprehensive & Collision

Optional, but critical given Florida’s hurricane and flood exposure.

Comprehensive covers storm damage, flooding, and theft; collision covers your own vehicle in an accident. Without either, storm and collision repairs come entirely out of pocket.

10/10

Florida's minimum coverage — PIP and property damage

Florida requires at least $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability (PDL) to register and drive a vehicle in the state.

No BIL Required

Florida doesn't require coverage for injuries you cause to others

Unlike almost every other state, Florida doesn’t require Bodily Injury Liability for most drivers. That means if you cause a serious accident, you could be personally responsible for the other driver’s injury costs beyond what PIP covers.

Common questions about car insurance in Florida

Is Florida a no-fault insurance state?

Yes. Florida’s Personal Injury Protection coverage pays for your medical expenses after an accident, regardless of who caused it.

Florida requires $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability (PDL). Bodily Injury Liability isn’t required for most drivers, but it’s worth carrying anyway.

High accident rates, a large share of uninsured drivers, hurricane and flood exposure, and historical PIP-related fraud all contribute to Florida’s above-average premiums.

If you become a Florida resident, you’re required to get a Florida-issued policy from a licensed insurer.

Compare quotes from multiple carriers, maintain a clean driving record, ask about every available discount, and review your policy every year.
