Lawrenceville GA Auto, Home & Business Insurance
The second-oldest city in the Atlanta area, Lawrenceville, the Gwinnett County seat, incorporated on December 15, 1821. The city remembers Captain James Lawrence, Commander of the Frigate Chesapeake during the War of 1812. Captain Lawrence, mortally wounded, gave his men the battle cry, "Don't give up the ship."
Since its inception in 1821, the Lawrenceville courthouse has witnessed its share of sensational news events. In 1978, as controversial magazine publisher Larry Flynt stood outside the courthouse speaking with his lawyer, the two discussing the obscenity charges they faced, a sniper shot at the pair. Flynt's injuries left him partially paralyzed.
Today, this historic courthouse houses the Gwinnett History Center, and nearby, the Gwinnett History Museum maintains a collection of Georgia folk artifacts.
